I had the privilege of talking to Deborah Acason before she went off to the Commonwealth Games. It was fantastic to watch her win the Bronze medal, although there were a few heart stopping moments prior to her lifting 110 kilograms, a Commonwealth Games record. Women’s weightlifting became a Commonwealth Games sport in 2002 at the Manchester games. Australia did well to achieve two silver and two bronze medals behind powerhouse weightlifting countries such as Canada and India.
A young Deborah Acason (Lovely) won silver in the up to 75kg class and went on to win Commonwealth Gold in Melbourne four years later. Bronze medals were won by Australia’s Erica Yamasaki, Nadeene Latif and Natasha Barker. Read the full story
