Pluimers surges to Ironwoman victory

Northcliffe’s Elizabeth Pluimers took an early season stranglehold on the Ironwoman series by winning the second round at Bondi Beach on Friday.

The convincing victory in the three-race elimination format gave the 23-year-old competitor her second win in as many rounds this season.

It gave Pluimers her fourth straight victory in the series starting with the last two rounds of last season’s series.

She controlled the eight-woman final from the opening swim leg and held on comfortably through the board and ski sections.

Northcliffe dominated the day, locking up the first three positions with reigning Australian and world champion Kristyl Smith claiming second spot while Courtney Hancock came home third.

Defending series champion Mooloolaba’s Alicia Marriott finished fifth on Friday, just behind clubmate Gemma Newbiggin.

Pluimers leads the five-round series on 50 points from Hancock on 36 and Marriott on 35.
