Marathon season open

Australia’s first marathon for 2011 will take place in Hobart’s scenic northern suburbs with the running of the 28th Cadbury Marathon on Sunday January 9.Participants have already entered from more than 11 countries, plus every state and territory in Australia, all with the intention of hitting the ground running in the new year.

There are four events on offer, Cadbury Marathon, Cadbury Half Marathon, The Running Edge 2.5km and the Caramello 1.25km event for the little ones.

The 2010 race brought new course records in both the half and full marathons, so the chance of running a fast time has attracted a top field again for the 2011 event.

The women’s marathon has attracted defending champion Sharon Ryder of Brisbane, with 2006 Australian Marathon champion Jenny Gillard set to be her major challenge. Gillard has recently settled with her family in Hobart and will make her debut in the full race at Cadbury.

A host of local talent will also be vying for national attention, set to battle it out for the state title which will also be held within the event.

For the second year running, the Cadbury Half Marathon will also play host to the Australian Masters Half Marathon Championships.

Entries are open online now at www.cadburymarathon.com.au and are also taken on the day at the Cadbury Chocolate Factory where the event starts and finishes.
