Australian Commonwealth Games gold medallist Rochelle Gilmore insists she will be fit for September’s world road cycling championships, despite suffering a fractured pelvis.
Gilmore suffered the injury in a pileup earlier this month near the end of stage five in the Tour of Italy.
The road world’s at Copenhagen in late September are Gilmore’s major focus this year.
“Nothing will stand in the way of my goals for September 24 (the women’s road race) in Denmark,” she said.
“A fractured pelvis sounds serious and yes it is, but I’m determined to let the bone heal quickly by complete immobilisation for the next 10 days.
“I will do everything in my power to let the bone heal before my next scan on July 22.
“I have positive hopes of returning to the bike by the end of this month.”
Gilmore suffered several other injuries in the crash, including bruising to her hip, ribs, ankle and knee.
But she has been unable to walk properly or apply pressure to her right leg and a scan revealed the pelvis fracture.
Her Honda team had a tough women’s Tour of Italy, with overall hope Ashleigh Moolman crashing out of contention in stage three before finishing 13th.
But Gilmore also referred to the spate of crashes in the first half of the Tour de France, saying other riders had suffered worse injuries.
“When I’m feeling disappointed about this year’s Giro crash I just need to think about all the unfortunate guys who have crashed out of the Tour de France, or out of GC contention,” she said.
“I’ve come away from this one in a horrific state, but I will recover quickly and return, so I feel fortunate when I think of others in a worse condition.”
Gilmore noted this was her first crash since nearly a year ago.
