The Hockeyroos wrapped up their tour of Argentina with a 2-1 victory over world No.3 team Germany at the Four Nations tournament.
The win saw them finish third in the competition after an impressive two weeks under new coach coach Adam Commens, in which they drew with world champions Argentina twice and defeated them once.
The Australians were forced to come from behind in the clash in Rosario after Germany struck first, scoring in the 23rd minute to take a one-goal advantage into the second half.
Jodie Schulz broke through for the Hockeyroos from a penalty corner to make it 1-1 at the 52 minute mark, with striker Ashleigh Nelson netting the winner with only eight minutes remaining.
Commens, who debuted eight new players for the tour, was pleased with the grit displayed by the the predominantly young squad.
“We had a good performance today. We came back from a goal down which was pleasing because we were able to stick to our game plan,” he said.
“We struggled early in the second half but I think we finished off much stronger and to be honest we’re unlucky not to have scored even a few more goals.”
While pleased with the team’s performance in Argentina, he said the team would continue to focus on long term development.
“Overall I have been really pleased with the way we have played. For such a young group we have played well against some world class opponents,” Commens said.
“However I think we all recognise that we still have a long way to go until we can match it with the top teams at the major tournaments.
“Both Argentina and Germany were missing some key players during these matches and we know they will have a stronger line up when we play them at the Champions Trophy later in the year.”
